A Much Needed Weekend

Great.Weekend.

Friday.  Vince got off work at noon, (I love summer hours), and we had some nice adult time before taking his car to swap for his Dad's truck.  We picked Bella up in the truck from school, which is one of her most favorite things in the world, and headed to Ikea to get our new sofa!  Friday, late afternoon is the best time to go to Ikea because no one is there.  We ate dinner, and then wove aimlessly around the top floor letting Bella "explore" all the different rooms and what not, and since it was practically empty no one was bothered with her 5 year old antics plus she worked out her excess energy... everybody wins :)  Bella got a canopy that hangs from the ceiling for her bed and a stuffed strawberry before we made it downstairs to load up the sofa.  The red sofa is now in the office where it was always meant to be, and the living room is now awesome, just awesome.  After we put Bella to bed, we both stretched out and fell asleep watching a movie.  I think we wandered to bed around 3 a.m.  good.sofa.

Saturday.  Today we went to PetSmart and Costco.  At PetSmart, we did a little aquarium research, and Vince decided he wanted to set up the 20 gallon tank we have at home.  So he bought a filter,  and then did a lot of research about freshwater tanks when he got home.  It is now full of water/river stones/glass stones only in the beginning stages of adding good bacteria making it hospitable for fish.  We're going to add some freshwater plants first and then fish.  It should be pretty nice when complete, but I'm still worried about upkeep... we'll see...  Next we went to Costco so that Vince could pick out a new tv for his birthday. He soooooooo deserves it!  He picked out a 47 inch which looks huge in our living room, but is a perfect size for the wall it's on which is across from the sofa.  Watching movies at home just became fantastic!  After putting Bella to bed, our friend Mark came over and we had a bonfire and played a game of Bocce.  We set the purple chair on fire, it was time and it was that chair's destiny.  I feel better now that it's gone.

Sunday.  We spent a lot of time working outside today, and we got an estimate for fixing the chimney and replacing the bay window.  I love home ownership, but damn it's expensive at times.  Bella enjoyed lunch out in her wisteria fort, and after a brief visit with some friends, we all got cleaned up.  After returning the truck, we went to have dinner at Pine Lake which is always nice because it's free and there are no dishes to clean up.  After I put B-bo to bed, Vince did a little work, and I took down the snowflakes.  It was time.  I'm going to do something special with them, and if you are a friend of mine you might just find out what in a week or two :)

Now it's Monday morning, and it's Vince's birthday <3  Should be a great day...  Time to get dressed and get the kiddo to school!

Staying preoccupied.

Vince's cousin, Susan, gave me a bunch of designer fabric samples, most of which were large 2x2 squares. I took some fun French Poodle fabric and made Bella an extra large zippered pillow perfect for storing all her stuffed animals and providing a giant floor pillow in one.  love.it.

My trip to Hattiesburg.

This all begins one week ago, last Tuesday...

Tuesday I spent the whole day getting everything/one ready for me to be out of town for 6 days.  I made itineraries for Vince and his parents so that everyone knew what their responsibilities for Bella were.  I packed a bag for Bella because she would be spending 2 nights with her grandparents, I made a pile of stuff that needed to be put in Vince's car like a birthday present/ballet clothes/list so that he would not be able to forget anything,  did laundry, cleaned up and packed all of my things.  Thankfully, Bella spent the night at her grandparents on Tuesday night so that I could finish up and spend a little time with Vince before leaving.

Wednesday.  We were up and out the door by 6:45 headed to the airport.  My flight didn't leave until 10 but Vince wanted to take me to the airport, and I didn't want him to be late for work thus the early arrival.  No matter though, I had my Nook and the Hunger Games series waiting for me so I was set.  Both flights, I had a connection in Atlanta before my final destination in Gulfport, were smooth and on time.  I retrieved my luggage and was cruising along in my rental car by 3.  I stopped at Papa's house first to unload and use the bathroom, and by 4:30 I was headed to the hospital.  I had a hard time actually walking into the hospital, and once I was finally in Papa's room the tears came.  He looked so small curled up in his hospital bed, but he greeted me with the biggest smile and his arms held out wide in true Papa form.  I sat snuggled next to him for a couple of hours talking to him, and just soaking up everything Papa.  His oncologist came in with his test results while I was there...  He went into a whole spiel about chemotherapy which was a total waste of breath.  Papa decided to do a few radiation treatments to help alleviate the pain in his chest, and then manage his pain with a morphine patch and oral morphine as needed so that he could go home.  We decided to take him off the drip and get him started on the patch/oral to see if his pain could be managed that way and if so, he could go home on Friday.  It was extremely hard to leave him, and after a long teary hug, I said good night.  I got back to his house around 9, and it just felt all wrong being there by myself without him.  My Aunt left me a bottle of wine in the fridge so I had a glass and a half a Xanax so I could sleep.

Thursday.  I woke up, did some laundry and unloaded the dishwasher before I headed back up to the hospital around 10 a.m.  Once there, I helped him shower/shave, and put some fresh pj's on him.  I stayed with him until around 1:30 to make sure he was taking his morphine, eating a bit and resting.  I went back to his house for a bit to do some more laundry and to take a break myself for a couple of hours.  Around 4, I went back to the hospital and stayed until around 8.  By the time I got home, I was feeling extremely nauseous.  Little did I know that I was in for a long night.  Turns out, I caught a stomach bug, and I spent the early hours of the morning huddled on/over the toilet willing any kind of fluids to stay down with no success.  It was coming out both ends, and on top of it all, I started my period too just to keep things interesting I guess...

Friday.  I finally relax enough to fall asleep around 6:45 a.m. only to be awoken an hour later by a very distressed Papa.  He had the stomach flu too.  Apparently, a family with 4 kids came and visited him the day before... What is wrong with people?  Assholes.  So I rush back up to the hospital wondering how much good I'm going to be seeing as I haven't been able to keep anything down, and if he's throwing up that's going to make me puke because I have the most sensitive gag reflex on the planet.  Thankfully, my Aunt Doris showed up too, was able to get both of our stomachs settled and had us resting before she left.  While Papa snoozed in his bed, I alternated between snoozing and reading on the couch in his room.  I stayed until about 1, before heading home so I could take a shower and try to eat a little something.  At 3, Papa called to tell me he was being discharged, and I'm not gonna lie, I was very nervous about this.  I mean, what if we both started puking again in the middle of the night...  Before leaving the hospital, they tried to tell me that Papa had an appointment at the Cancer Center for a radiology consult.  BB would have been so proud of me, because I looked that nurse right in the eyes and told her to cancel the appointment right now.  Enough was enough, he could go on Monday, but we have been puking all day, we are tired and we are going home.  I don't care what Dr. Cheng wants, I am taking Papa home, end of discussion.  The nurse looked at me, and just asked what time would I like to schedule the appointment for Monday :)  I got Papa home around 5.  I got him into some fresh pj's and let him have ice cream for dinner.  He was in bed snoring by 8, and I wasn't far behind.  We had an uneventful first night home which I desperately needed for a bit of a confidence boost that I could do this.

Saturday.  We slept until 8, and then I helped him shower and put on real clothes for the first time in 3 weeks.  We had a little breakfast and then he took a snooze on the couch while I washed his sheets/pj's and did a little cleaning up.  My cousin, Alex, got in around lunchtime, and we spent a lovely evening listening to Papa tell us stories from his childhood, WW2, and living in Africa.  I helped Papa to bed around 9, and Alex and I stayed up talking and laughing until about 2 a.m.  He told me that as far as his cousins go, he feels closest to Andrew and I even though we don't get to see each other as often.  That really made my heart smile.  Alex and I are 10 years apart, I'm the oldest grandkid, and he is the youngest.  10 years ago, we were both living in his parent's house and we had a good time talking about that.  He told me I was the coolest nanny ever :)  I took him everywhere he needed to be to help my Aunt out, and all his buddies thought I was hot... good times.

Sunday.  Alex left after lunch, and my Mom got in around 4 p.m.  Papa spent most of the day resting and  once my Mom got there, we all took a much needed nap.  Papa went to bed around 9, and my Mom and I stayed up watching Cupcake Wars for a while.  It was really good to hang out and chat with her on the sofa, I really miss her and I was exhausted from being the lone caregiver for Papa for the last 5 days.  Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't change the last 5 days for the world, but it doesn't change the fact that I was plain tired.

Monday.  After a shower, and some breakfast, Papa got settled on the couch, and Mom decided to take me shopping before I was to head out in the afternoon.  BJ, Papa's neighbor, was mowing the grass and Aunt Doris is right down the street, so my Mom felt Papa would be fine for an hour or so while she took me to get something pretty.  Her words not mine :)  3 dresses, 1 skirt, and 1 shirt later I was feeling pretty good about shopping.  One of the dresses is for Andrew and Sarah's wedding and it is gorgeous!  I love shopping with my Mom <3  By 12:45, I was packed and ready to go.  While hugging Papa good bye, I broke down because more than likely, it will be our last hug.  I balled all the way to the airport, and spent most of my flight home fighting back tears.  I got into the Rabbit at 9 p.m. to head home feeling relieved, exhausted, and heartbroken.

What a gift I was given to be able to spend 6 days with Papa.  Am I ready for the inevitable, absolutely not.  Am I at peace with it, yes.  Papa has lived an amazing 89 years, and the last thing I want to do is watch him linger/suffer the last days of his life.  He doesn't deserve that.  I am going to miss him something fierce, but I know I will see him again.

In the Morning...

Too tired.... So in the morning, after I drop Bella off at school, I will type up the blog I have been promising.  I just got off the phone with my Mom, and she was in tears so I have lost all momentum.  Instead, I will end with one of my favorite pictures from Bella's field trip to Patterson Farms last Monday to pick strawberries...  Team Lava Strawberry which consisted of  Lily, Bella, Joey and Luke Johnson, yes...the Luke Johnson :)

Time for a glass of wine I think

Mother's Day Weekend

Yes, I know we are way past this, but I am going to start with this weekend and then move forward...

I had a fantastic Mother's Day Weekend.  It started that Friday when we picked up Bella from school in Pap-Pap's truck.  Vince and I traded cars with him for 2 reasons, 1 so we could go to IKEA to get Bella a new bed, and 2 so Vince could get some truckloads of mulch this weekend from the recycling center.  After school, we went straight to Ikea, had dinner and then picked out B-bo's new bed.  She chose a black metal daybed that we can eventually put a trundle underneath.  Only thing, we forgot to buy the slats for it that night, so we used the box spring with the twin mattress for the time being which made her bed really high up.  Once it was time for bed, and we had her all settled in, she looked so tiny under her comforter, just a little head with crazy hair sunken into her pillow was visible.

Now on to Saturday... While Vince got ready to head to the recycling center for his first load of mulch, B-bo and I got dressed and first we went to Ikea to get her some slats for her bed, and then we went to Build-a-Bear.  I promised to take her during Spring Break, but that never happened because I had to help my Mom with my Grandmother in Cordele.  She chose an adorable little lamb that she named Livia.  After a quick trip to the Lego store, we had lunch at the food court and then took a ride on the merry-go-round before heading back to the car to go home.  When we got home, Vince was working on his second load of mulch and I helped him finish up.  He ended up doing 3 truckloads, and our backyard just keeps looking better and better!

Sunday... Happy Mother's Day!  Vince cooked me a yummy breakfast of scrambled eggs, cheese grits, bacon and biscuits...delicious!  Since I was such a good Mom this year, they surprised me with a Nook Color!  best.present.ever!  I downloaded the Hunger Games Series immediately, but waited to start until I left for Hattiesburg on Wednesday.  After lunch, Vince took Bella to the Nature Museum so that I could have a little quiet time to do whatever I liked.  I watched a little tv and messed around with my Nook.  That thing is so cool :)

Now, I must take a break and head to Noodle Night.  Once I return, I will launch into everything about my trip to Mississippi to visit Papa.

Random littles...

Bella has been bringing up a baby sister again.  "When am I going to have a baby sister Shequa?" is a frequent question as of late.  My response, "Well, you know honey, if I get pregnant it could end up being a baby brother."  Her response, "Not if we adopt a baby girl from China.  My best friend Mattie (a boy) has a sister named Katie and they got her from China.  We could just go to China and pick out a sister for me." In other words, she has definitely thought this out.  I mean DAMN.

I talked to Papa today.  He was a little slurry because of the pain meds, but sounded like Papa.  It helped to further imprint his voice in my brain because I don't ever want to forget it.  I can still hear my Dad clear as a bell saying "I love you more" and no one can erase/write over/ damage that copy <3

Vince moved some more hostas last night, so Bella did some more worm hunting.  She set up a bigger worm motel this time, and good thing because Vince said some of the worms were so big/fat that he thought a few were snakes.  And they were wiggling so much they were jumping off the ground.  Crazy!  We are going to have some rich dirt in our vegetable garden with the addition of all these worms :)

I was the first one to wake up this morning (very rare) and I had the dishwasher unloaded and breakfast ready for Bella before my first cup of coffee (even rarer).  I woke up a sleepy little girl that slept in nothing but panties last night.  I swear she grew overnight.  She was all stretched out with her blanket wadded up mostly near her head.  Her feet are beginning to stick out now from under her blanket, she is getting so big...

Time for me to get dressed, but not before I reheat my coffee and shuffle Bella to the bathroom to brush her teeth.

Have a great Wednesday <3

Haircut

Yep.  It was overdue, and past my usual 2 year mark.  It was time to cut my hair, 12 inches to be exact.  I think I lost about 3 lbs :)  Anyway, I realize it's still about 3 colors, and as we get closer to Andrew and Sarah's wedding I will take care of that.  I also got my eyebrows/lip waxed.  I looked like a freak when that was over with, but a freak with a sassy new haircut <3  And to answer your question, no, I do not know why Bella is staring at my boobs.  I don't know why she does a lot of things that she does.  Happy Tuesday!

Nice Reminder.

I'm not going to lie, it's been kind of a sad day.  I have been really focused on Papa, and to help keep the tears at bay I threw myself into cleaning the house.  It almost sparkles :)  After Vince got home, Bella took a bath, and then they worked on designing a website she had drawn at school today.  Really, website design at 5?  Anyway, while she ate her dinner, Vince and I watered the hostas and the vegetable garden and let the dogs run around while we did it.  After Bella ate all her dinner, Vince promised she could do a few tree swings before teeth brushing time.  The dogwood over the blue bench is perfect for swinging like a monkey and is one of Bella's current favorite things to do.  Tonight, I caught a great shot of her swinging in her Sleeping Beauty nightgown while Vince sits in as a spot.  Priceless.  It was a nice way to end a long day... smiling with my family <3

Again...

I have another matter of time situation on my hands, and this one I am surely not happy about.  Papa is dying.  My Mom is with him now, he has had a biopsy and we will know the results this afternoon.  Essentially, Hospice care is being discussed and we all know what that means.

Papa has made his wishes clear, and he has said he is ready.  He's 89, he's tired, and in my heart I know it's time, but that does not make it any easier.

My Mom will know more this afternoon after she has talked with his doctor.  My two wishes right now are that I get to talk to him one more time, and that he does not suffer.

heart = broken

Just Charming.

Our anniversary weekend was most excellent.  It started off Saturday morning with coffee and yard work, two of my favorite things :)  While Vince and I worked in various areas of the yard, Bella went from the front to back yard doing her thing while Switzerland the watch cat followed her around.  Around noon, we took a break for lunch, and we all got cleaned up.  Vince and I did a bit more work before taking Bella to her grandparent's house for a sleepover.  We dropped Bella off, but not before having a celebratory mojito with Jamma on the back deck.  Bella put on a short tap performance while we sipped our drinks and enjoyed the beautiful weather.  Once home, we had a couple of Jaeger shots each to get the party started!  Although, all the yard work from earlier had caught up, and we decided to take a short nap before heading out to dinner... I woke up at 3 a.m. so looks like we were not going to make it to dinner.  That's right, we fell asleep at 7 p.m. on our anniversary and had one of the best nights sleep in a long time.  worth.it.

So when we woke up Sunday morning, we had some coffee, and then went to walk around our yard to discuss our next plans of attack.  We ended up digging up most of the Hostas from the front yard and moving them to the backyard for a natural border between our grass and natural area.  I also started the fire that we had set up the night before and it burned all day long.  Pap Pap and Jamma brought Bella home around 10:30 and she jumped right in to help with the yard work.  While Vince was digging holes for the hostas in the backyard, Bella was digging through the dirt in the wheelbarrow hunting for worms.  When she would find one, she would carefully pick it up and put it in her red bucket full of moist dirt that she was calling the worm motel :)  By the end of the day, she had found more than 20 worms, and being the gardening connoisseur that she is, released them into our vegetable garden just under the Catnip plant.  She had a blast hunting for worms, and is ready to do it some more this weekend <3  Once finished, we all got cleaned up and decided to have a late lunch at the Flying Biscuit.  Afterwards, we went to see Rio in 3D and it wasn't bad.  Very colorful, great musical numbers and pretty funny, plus Bella really liked it and I guess that's really what matters.  After dinner and bedtime, Vince and I watched another old James Bond movie before calling it a night.

It was a beautifully perfect anniversary.  A lovely way to celebrate a very special day <3
